Translation

This is the Goddess anthem
'Hlab isthende' is
when during a zulu ceremony,
zulus slam their heels into the ground

So the first chant
Says this is a rhythm for all the Queens in the room, 'hlab isthende' go!
Get your sage, let the smoke alarms ring
They will all understand what time it is
We thick healthy and rocking the boat
Because we are the ones we have been waiting for.

This song is about convinction finding courage to face life - it is a crowd pleaser - the opening chant is the Queen inspiring her army before going to battle - reminding them of the ways to connect to their higher power and purpose so they can be strong enough to face the challenges ahead.

Verse 1 explanation
If they playing we swipe left ,
(referencing tinder when someone is not a match you swipe left )
Unapologetically taking up space ,
Swaying in formation
Boss walk, the crocodiles are entering
(Crocodile represents the God sobek who is the God of Fertility and military prowess in bantu mythology)
Cheese all of them,
(when something is considered cheese in bantu slang it means its rich )
Flaming like Molotov
Hit like a heartattack
But sweet like make up sex

Bridge :
'The uWaah chant "
Is a warrior chant used to empower the soldier in battle and to discourage the opponent - this is why our ancestors would sing in battle, to encourage their own troops and intimidate the enemy

Verse 2
Cannot oppress me
We are sowing seeds
While eyes are full of sleep
They are chewing chappies
We are eating peaches
Striking the match
Burning the chaff
I do not fake
Judgers are ablaze
I do not fake
Lighting up the flame
Fireworks insane

Growing up in Zululand, Toya has a strong sense of the power of her Zulu ancestry: a people who defeated British colonial forces, facing gunfire with spears. It’s this awareness, and her own identity as a queer, gender-non-confirming person, which encourages her to centre positive energy and a spirit of empowerment in her music. ... more
